WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Food and Drug Administration is launching its latest form of generic Viagra, a drug with the nickname "the little blue pill," after it became available in the U. S. market this week.
The drug is available only in tablet form and should be taken only with a doctor's prescription. It can be bought without a prescription at a discount and has not been approved for sale by the FDA.
Viagra is the first generic medicine approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
The drug will be available only in the U. market through the company's Web site www. Pfizer.com. It will be available to the public beginning January 1.
Pfizer also is developing a generic version of Viagra that is as effective as its older Viagra, which was available at a lower cost.
"In some ways, we think this is the first generic that's available for erectile dysfunction," said Dr. Mark Mermin of Duke University. "That's going to have the largest share of the market, and the largest share of the market and that's going to have the best potential for the vast majority of men who are going to have erectile dysfunction."
The company's Viagra, which will be available through the company's Web site www. Pfizer.com, is available to people 18 and older and is approved by the FDA.
